Near-side pragmatics focuses on what is said while far-side focuses on the logic implications of uttering a phrase. They claim that semantics already determines some of the pragmatics of an utterance, while other pragmatics is determined by pragmatic processes. The context is among the most important aspects of pragmatics. This means that the same word can have different meanings in different contexts, depending on things like indexicality and ambiguity. Discourse structure, beliefs of the speaker and intentions, and expectations of the audience can also alter the meaning of a phrase. Another aspect of pragmatics is that it is a matter of culture. This is because different cultures have different rules for what is acceptable to say in various situations. In certain cultures, it's considered polite to look at each other. In other cultures, it's rude. There are many different perspectives of pragmatics, and lots of research is being done in the field. There are many different areas of research, such as pragmatics that are computational and formal as well as experimental and theoretical pragmatism, intercultural and cross linguistic pragmatics and pragmatics that are experimental and clinical. The subject of pragmatics has a connection to other areas of the study of linguistics, such as semantics and syntax, or philosophy of language. In recent years, the area of pragmatics has been developing in several different directions, including computational linguistics, pragmatics of conversation, and theoretic pragmatics. Others contend that the possibility that a statement may be interpreted in different ways is pragmatics. Other pragmatics researchers have taken a different approach in arguing that the truth-conditional meaning a utterance has is just one of the many ways in which the utterance may be interpreted and that all interpretations are valid. This method is sometimes described as “far-side pragmatics”. Recent research in pragmatics has sought to integrate semantic and far side methods. It attempts to represent the full range of interpretational possibilities for a speaker's utterance by demonstrating how the speaker's beliefs as well as intentions contribute to the interpretation. For example, Champollion et al. (2019) combine a Gricean game-theoretic model of the Rational Speech Act framework with technological innovations from Franke and Bergen (2020).
